In a statement, two aid workers in Ethiopia stated that an airstrike was carried out on the camp for the internally displaced in the Tigray region in the north of the country, 56 people in the camp were killed and at least 30 people were injured. Aid workers, who did not want to be named as they were not authorized to speak to the media, said the death toll was confirmed by local authorities. One of the aid workers who visited the Shire Shul Hospital, where the injured were brought for treatment, said that there were many elderly women and children in the camp.
Military Spokesperson Colonel Getnet Adane and government spokesperson Legesse Tulu have not yet made a statement. The government had previously stated that they did not target civilians in the 14-month conflict with the rebel Tigray forces.
